For the Dutch Department of Social Affairs, I just completed a report with a comparative analysis of innovative policies in refugee integration in 10 European countries. The report signals several trends in innovation (labour market integration first, lack of attention to health and social-cultural interaction), and observes that although most countries adopt a mainstreamed approach, especially those countries with relatively high numbers of refugees choose to complement a mainstreamed approach with more ad-hoc and specific measures. The report was developed with students from the MSc. Programme Governance of Migration and Diversity. Click here to read the report.

Dat stellen sociale wetenschappers dr. Arjen Leerkes en dr. Peter Scholten van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam  in hun essay Landen in Nederland: de vluchtelingenstroom in integratieperspectief, dat zij schreven in opdracht van het Ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid.

De integratie van vluchtelingen wordt enorme lokale uitdaging

Na de maatschappelijke aandacht voor de komst van vluchtelingen en de vestiging van asielzoekerscentra, volgt de komende tijd de uitdaging van maatschappelijke integratie van vluchtelingen. Omdat integratie een lokaal proces is, maar ook omdat feitelijk nauwelijks nog sprake is van een nationaal integratiebeleid, zal dit vooral op de schouders van lokaal bestuur komen. Echter, ook gemeenten hebben hun integratiebeleid grotendeels omgevormd in algemeen beleid, en specifieke budgetten zijn grotendeels wegbezuinigd. Het is dus maar de vraag of lokale overheden momenteel voldoende toegerust en voorbereid zijn op de integratie van deze nieuwe migranten. Veel meer dan nieuwkomers die in de jaren ’80 of ’90 naar Nederland kwamen, zullen de vluchtelingen van nu op zichzelf zijn aangewezen om van hun vlucht naar Nederland ook daadwerkelijk een succes te maken.

This study aims to develop a better understanding of patterns of media-attention and media-framing of issues related to Dutch immigration policies and the influence of media-attention and -framing on politics and policies. The research focuses on sixteen cases in the period 2011-2015 including cases with relatively low as well as relatively high levels of media-attention. This enables us to compare the cases on the aspect of media-attention as well as the implications of media attention for policies. Our cases vary in another respect as well: some cases concern concrete and visible individuals or groups, while other cases concern more abstract phenomena or policy proposals.
